Sustainability in Food Manufacturing

Sustainability in a sauce plant is not a campaign. It is a set of small operational decisions that either add up over a year or do not get made at all.

Waste is the first place to look

The largest environmental cost in food manufacturing is product that never gets eaten. A batch rejected at the quality gate is raw material, energy and water already spent for nothing. So the cheapest sustainability measure available to us is the same one that protects the customer: get the batch right the first time, every time.

Packaging

We have been reducing pack weight where the pack still protects the product across its full shelf life, and standardising on fewer formats so cases stack and ship more efficiently. Where a lighter pack would shorten shelf life, we leave it alone — a pack that fails is worse for everyone than a slightly heavier one.

Sourcing close to the plant

Where an Egyptian supplier can meet our specification, we buy Egyptian. That is shorter transport, a shorter chain to audit, and a supply line we can actually visit. It is not always possible, and we do not pretend otherwise — but it is the default we start from.

None of this is dramatic. It is the version of sustainability that survives contact with a production schedule.
